Climate change has become a threat to global food security and agricultural sustainability. Different abiotic stresses such as drought, heat, cold, heavy metals and salinity have negative impact on plant growth, development and consequently yield of crop plants. Plants being sessile have in-built defense strategies at the molecular, cellular and whole-plant level and it has become important to elucidate the structural and functional modulations of stress-responsive genetic and metabolic networks. Over the years, various ‘omics’ tools like genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, ionomics, and phenomics have been developed to gain insight into the genetic circuits, signaling cascade, and overall adaptability under stress milieu. The state-of-the art technologies and progress in omics science have shaped-up the stress biology as an interdisciplinary research frontier which is bound to revolutionize the designing of crops better suited to perform under extreme climatic conditions.
